(This is taken from an EM from Steve Lubin, who is the "I" in what follows.)
I thought the race started in 1958.
Richard Bronson was the founder of the club in 1956.
I think the Mt Hamilton race was Jobst Brandt's creation. (Jobst Brandt passes.) I remember Jobst making the beautiful walnut, chainwheel and cast bronze trophies in the 60's when I was around. I have two junior trophies which were distinctive but not a spectacular. I picked up prizes he sent from Germany at Jobst's parent's house around '62 so he felt protective of the race even when living out of the country.
Peter Locke, Steve Smith and Allan Tinkham were very early members of Pedali.
Here is a link to some of the '60's NCCA Newsletters that I have scanned: Sept-Oct 1962 has an article and photos from Mt Hamilton Sept. 1963 too. I am overdue to scan some of the later issues but will try to get that done...
Podium? Who needs a stink'ng podium? One year when I was in the junior race we arrived at the finish line and the guy who was supposed to pick the finish was following his son who was further behind than imagined. Another person following the race went ahead and scratched a line across the road with a rock.
Here is a youtube recording of a talk we gave about Pedali at San Jose History: youtube Terry Peterson (not Terry Shaw), Don's son tells some great SJBC stories too.
Here are some Pedali Photos:
Here are some photos from Tom Yocom. I've tried to put the Mt Hamilton photos in a subfolder. The Hamilton photos have notes in the "info" tags. Tom might be able to correct my mistakes or add to this.
